The costs on every Etsy sale
- Listing fee — $0.20, charged when you list an item and again every time it renews or sells.
- Transaction fee — 6.5% of the item price plus whatever you charged for shipping and gift wrap.
- Payment processing fee — a percentage plus a flat amount, varying by your country, taken when the buyer pays.
- Regulatory Operating Fee — an extra country-specific surcharge Etsy added to cover local digital-services taxes. Etsy raised these rates across most affected countries on June 22, 2026 (UK from 0.32% to 0.48%, France to 1.14%, Italy to 0.80%, Spain to 0.88%, Hungary added at 1.97%), while lowering others (India to 0.05%, Turkey to 1.67%). Sellers outside these countries never see it — and plenty of older calculators online are still quoting the pre-June-2026 rates.
- Offsite Ads fee — 15% (or 12% for shops over $10k/yr) but only on sales that came from an Etsy-placed ad elsewhere on the web. Under $10k/yr in revenue the program is mandatory; above that you can opt out.
- Your own costs — materials, packaging and whatever you actually pay to ship, which Etsy's fees don't touch at all.
VAT on fees. Sellers in the UK and EU are charged VAT on Etsy's fees (for example 20% in the UK and France, 19% in Germany). If you are VAT-registered you can usually reclaim it, in which case set the VAT field to 0.
Why "charging for shipping" doesn't dodge fees
Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies to shipping you charge the buyer, not just the item price. Rolling shipping into the item price instead of listing it separately doesn't change your fees either way — it only affects how the listing looks to buyers comparing prices.
Worked example
A $35 item with $5 shipping charged, $10 materials and $6 actual shipping cost, US seller, no offsite ads: revenue is $40, fees total $4.25 (listing $0.20, transaction $2.60, processing $1.45), costs are $16 — leaving $19.75 profit, a 49.4% margin.
